Name: Chris Dahlberg Place of birth: Madison, CT How
did you get started in toy design: It was really a fluke. I
had graduated from Parson's School of Design with an MFA and was just
thinking about creating art. My plan was to somehow situate myself in
Manhattan, NY, get a studio, be involved in the gallery scene, you know....starve.
My mindset was very different back then. It was all about high art, theory,
conceptualism, etc. I soon realized that none of this was going to pay
the bills. So, with some encouragement from friends & family, I answered
an ad for a toy sculptor. Length of time in the toy industry: I've been working in the toy industry for about nine years. Job title and description: Designer/Sculptor. I mostly work 3-dimensionally with clay. As a sculptor, I'm responsible for making the figures. Bringing a 2-D design to a 3-D finish. Favorite plaything as a child & why: Any thing to do with monstes and creatures. Mego made some classic Universal Monsters, Planet of the Apes, that sort of thing. I may even have one or two of those figures still tucked away in my folk's attic. Favorite playthings currently & why: Long blonde hair, blue eyes, 33/26/33.....Don't ask why. Best part about your job: I'm getting to do what got me started sculpting in the first place. I'm creating the creatures, villains & heroes I wanted as a child. Worst Part about your job: Listening to Jim's inane banter all.....day.....looooong (just kidding, Jim). I can't say that there IS a worst part. Even when things are bad, I'm thankful of all that I have. Number of figures/playsets/toys you've been involved in: I have no idea. Two years at McFarlane Toys, three years with Four Horsemen......a LOT. Stand out toy you've worked on in your opinion: The Crow, Chucky, He-Man. If you could have any super power, what would it be & why: Invisibility. Why? Refer back to "Favorite playthings currently". |
